We are very proud of our sporting achievements competing both locally and regionally. Children can take part in wide range of sporting events, develop new skills and strengths and take part in field and track events, galas, team sports, dance and even wheel chair basketball! We believe that the range of physical activities on offer inspires children to be determined, succeed and excel.
At Packmoor Ormiston Academy all children have access to two hours high quality PE every week. One session of PE will be indoors and the other will be outdoors. One session is currently delivered by a PE specialist, of many years’ experience, and the other is taught by the class teacher. PE lessons are carefully planned and build on skills and knowledge taught in previous years. There is differentiation, enabling all children to fully engage and rise to the challenge.
Pupils at Packmoor enjoy taking part a wide variety of competitions. We encourage children to take part in cross country races, football competitions, multi-skills, sports hall athletics, tri-golf, athletics and Paralympics. We pride ourselves on our success and we currently hold the winners trophies for overall swimming, girls athletics, boys athletics, overall athletics, boys and girls cross country and girls football. We utilise links with two local football clubs, who provide us with football coaching for gifted and talented children, as well as active sessions for a wider range of pupils.
We have held the Gold Schools Game Award for two years now. This website can be accessed by clicking the following link: School Games Mark
To achieve this award we have demonstrated that: we train young leaders; that all staff are trained and confident in the delivery of PE, that all pupils are fully engaged in PE lessons and that any external providers we use are knowledgeable and competent. We were one of the few schools in our locality to trial personal best and level 0 activities.
Every year we take part in the city-wide dance festive, held at a local theatre. Approximately 30 children participate, watched by an audience of several hundred. We have also showcased our dancing at a local high school and this year, have been asked to perform at the Lord Mayor’s Celebration.
Two of our staff have received gold OAT awards for contributions to dance and athletics.
PE CPD is very important at Packmoor and this year, staff have taken part in training to ensure lessons are differentiated and provide challenge. Amongst other resources we also use the Premier League Primary Stars materials. Staff are familiar with (and use these materials in their lessons) after a staff training session. The PE lead has also attended a course, run by the FA, to further her knowledge and skills.
Every year we enjoy 3 whole school PE days. Often we have external providers coming into school, bringing a wider range of resources and equipment into school for the children to experience. This has included wheelchair basketball, rugby (with Sir Steve Redgrave) and Paralympic resources. All children enjoy these days and especially relish the opportunity to try different sports.
